Sunrisers Eastern Cape retain SA20 title─── 08:55 Sun, 11 Feb 2024
The Eastern Cape Sunrisers are still South Africa’s only SA20 champions after beating Durban Super Giants in the final in Cape Town last night.
The Sunrisers, who struggled to get going in the competition after their first match against Joburg Super Kings rained out without a ball begin bowled, excelled towards the business end of the competition.
The Sunrisers won the toss and elected to bat first. Strong batting performances by the youngster Jordan Hermann (42 off 26), Tom Abell (55 off 34), captain Aidan Markram (42 off 26) and Tristan Stubbs (56 off 30) set the team up with a solid 204/3 after 20 overs. It was an average bowling performance by the Super Giants, with captain Keshav Maharaj taking 2 wickets for 33 runs and Reece Topley trapping Dawid Malan before the wickets for only 6 runs.
The Super Giants never really got going with the bat with only Wiaan Mulder and Dwaine Pretorius really contributing. Star batsman for the Super Giants, Heinrich Klaassen, couldn’t get any runs on the board in the final and was given out LBW off the bowling of Ottniel Baartman after only one ball. Marco Jansen was the star bowler for the Sunrisers, taking five wickets for 30 runs. He was ably supported by Dan Worrall, who took two for 15 and Baartman, with two for 17. The Super Giants stumbled to 115 all out in 17 overs, giving the Sunrisers their second SA20 title.
Even though he didn’t perform on the night, Heinrich Klaassen was named Betway Player of the Season and Batter of the Season. Sunrisers bowler Marco Jansen received the Rising Star award, with the 30-year old Ottniel Baartman taking the Bowler of the Season award.
