Alleged bogus Free State broker out on bail─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 08:36 Wed, 13 Nov 2024
A Free State man who allegedly defrauded an investor of R800,000 has been released on bail.
Christiaan Jacobus Venter (52) was released on R10,000 bail after appearing before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday (11/11). He was arrest after evading the police for a long time.
The case was postponed to 21 January for trial.
Venter met the complaint in 2007 and introduced himself as a broker, said Free State Hawks spokesperson Fikiswa Matoti. He allegedly promised the complainant 16% annual interest on his investment.
’Huge losses’
The unnamed victim invested R800,000. Instead of delivering on the promise, Venter said he had lost “huge amounts of money” on the JSE.
The complainant opened a criminal case against Venter, which was referred to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation in Bloemfontein.
