“Through the demolition of these buildings, the department aims to prevent illegal activities.”

After numerous complaints from residents about empty dilapidated buildings attracting illegal activities, the Matlosana municipality embarked on a demolition project in the city.

The Planning and Human Settlements Department officially embarked on the demolition of abandoned and dilapidated buildings in Matlosana and the last set of buildings that were demolished was in Stilfontein.

These buildings posed risks to the safety of people and some were safe havens for illegal activities including drug use.

“The department has taken a significant step towards addressing the issue of dilapidated buildings in all areas of Matlosana,” said media relations officer Kelebogile Moleko.

“This initiative comes after many residents have been complaining about the neglected buildings, which have become hotspots for illegal activities, by demolishing these buildings, the department aims to eliminate these hazards and prevent further harm.”

Owners need to take responsibility for their properties and ensure they comply with the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act of South Africa. If not, the municipality may take further action, including applying for a demolition order from the court.

The project started on Monday, 16 September in Elandia where one building was demolished after complaints from neighbors about their safety. There was uncertainty on whether the house was standing empty or whether residents moved into it illegally.

“The municipality aims to sell the stands, make revenue, and develop these areas. So far the municipality has managed to demolish seven buildings with more outstanding,” said Moleko.

“The process of demolishing the buildings was accomplished after the municipality made inspections on the dilapidated and abandoned buildings in the area, the municipality then applied for a demolition order from the court which was granted.”

More buildings will be inspected and demolished to eradicate illegal activities and prevent further harm.
