North West insurance killer’s trial set for next year─── ZENANDE MPAME 12:52 Tue, 10 Sep 2024
“Setshwantsho has been charged with murder, two counts of fraud, and one count of defeating the ends of justice.”
The alleged North West insurance killer will spend another Christmas Day in custody as her trial date is set for mid-January next year.
Agnes Setshwantsho (49) was remanded in custody when she appeared at the Mahikeng High Court on Monday (9/9) for a pre-trial hearing. The trial will start on Monday, 20 January till Friday, 24 January.
The alleged insurance killer has been charged with murder, two counts of fraud, and one count of defeating the ends of justice.
“The case against alleged insurance killer Agnes Setshwantsho has been postponed to 20 to 24 January 2025 for trial at Mahikeng High Court,” said NPA communications officer Sive Gunya. “Setshwantsho is to remain in custody and has been charged with murder, two counts of fraud, and one count of defeating the ends of justice.”
More murder and fraud charges were added to Setshwantsho’s charge sheet when she made an appearance at the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court in February.
The additional charges emanate from an incident where the accused, who had insured her son for R6 million, made an insurance claim after the passing of her child under suspicious circumstances.
Setshwantsho was arrested in November last year in Centurion during a takedown operation led by the SAPS in collaboration with an insurance company after it was discovered that she had reportedly killed her relatives to profit from insurance claims.
It is alleged that she is the beneficiary of 58 insurance policies from her extended family.
In April, forensic teams exhumed the remains of Setshwantsho’s husband, warrant officer Justice Setshwantsho.
‘Warrant officer Setshwantsho was allegedly killed by his wife’
“An autopsy will determine the cause of death of Justice,” said North West police spokesperson Sabatha Mokgwabone.
“The late warrant officer Setshwantsho was allegedly killed by his wife who has been arrested for the murder of her niece and son, Kutlo Setshwantsho.”
Mokgwabone said they haven't received the autopsy report yet.
