Centlec grappling with vandalism of infrastructure in Bloemfontein─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 12:36 Tue, 20 Aug 2024
“These barbaric acts have not only plunged our communities into darkness, but have left us dealing with unnecessary high volumes of streetlight repair service requests.”
Centlec is deeply concerned over the alarming number of cases of cable theft and vandalism targeting street lights components across Bloemfontein.
Incidents of theft of street light cables and Centlec’s network cables were recorded on the N8 from the airport bridge, the M10 road to Lemo Mall, Hilton, University of the Free State towards the Hillside View College, the South Park cemetery, Lourierpark, and recently along the N1, said Centlec spokesperson Lele Mamatu.
‘It also jeopardises the safety of motorists and pedestrians’
“These barbaric acts have not only plunged our communities into darkness, but have left us dealing with unnecessary high volumes of streetlight repair service requests. The perpetrators … target strategic areas within our area of supply to steal and vandalise without any fear.
“This is a trend that must be curbed as it is not only expensive to replace stolen cables and vandalised equipment, but it also jeopardises the safety of motorists and pedestrians,” he said.

Mamatu appealed to the community of Mangaung to take ownership of it and protect the valuable infrastructure from the thugs, calling on residents to work together with various community-based organisations against this crime.
Residents are requested to contact law enforcement agencies to report any suspicious criminal behaviour.
