Pulane Nel Sekepe spoke to Prof. Corlia Janse van Vuuren about the high-quality programmes in intimate classes, which provide students with individual support:

Advice about application deadlines

The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Free State (UFS) in Bloemfontein distinguishes itself through its commitment to high-quality education and personalised student support. One of its standout features is the smaller class sizes, which allow for more individual attention and support, fostering an environment where students can thrive academically and clinically. This intimate setting ensures that students not only excel in theoretical knowledge but also in practical and clinical skills, making them highly sought after in the job market.

A key aspect of the faculty's approach to education is the integration of theory, practical training, and preclinical exposure in technologically advanced simulation and skills laboratories. These state-of-the-art facilities equip students with the necessary skills to navigate various healthcare environments effectively. As they progress into their clinical training years, students gain hands-on experience across a wide spectrum of healthcare settings and conditions, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of the medical field before they even graduate.

Another significant advantage of the Faculty of Health Sciences at UFS is its strategic location. The faculty, along with various clinical training areas, is situated within the broader university campus. This proximity enriches the student experience, creating a dynamic and cohesive learning environment.

Key Dates and Application Deadlines

Prospective students aiming to pursue qualifications in Medicine, Radiation Sciences, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, and Optometry must note the critical application deadline of 31 May. This is a strict deadline, and late applications will not be considered. Timely submission is crucial to secure a place in these highly competitive programmes.

Recent Changes in the Selection Policy: NBT’s no longer compulsory

The selection policy for the Faculty of Health Sciences has undergone notable changes, particularly with the exclusion of the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) from the selection process. Instead, the selection criteria now focus on academic performance in relevant subjects, overall academic performance (AP scores), and achievements in sports, culture, and leadership roles.

Additionally, the health questionnaire or medical certificate requirement is now integrated into the online application form, simplifying the application process. If additional medical information is necessary, the faculty will reach out to the applicant.

Specific changes include the adjustment of the AP score requirement for Biokinetics to 30 and the removal of the mandatory practice visit for Occupational Therapy applicants. These updates aim to streamline the application process and make it more accessible to prospective students.

Final Advice for Prospective Students

The Faculty of Health Sciences encourages all prospective students to thoroughly review the selection policies and requirements for their desired programmes on the UFS website. Being well-informed about the specifics of each programme will help applicants better prepare their applications and increase their chances of success. The faculty's future-focused approach ensures that graduates are well-prepared to enter the healthcare industry, equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to make significant contributions to the field.
