New mayor takes over reigns at Free State municipality─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 14:43 Wed, 16 Aug 2023
The troubled Sasolburg-based Metsimaholo Local Municipality in the Free State has finally appointed a new mayor.
Jack Malindi from the African Independent Congress (AIC) was elected as the new mayor of the Metsimaholo Municipality on Wednesday. Malindi replaces DA councillor Jeff Zwane, who was removed through a vote of no confidence on Tuesday (2/8) during a council meeting held at the Harry Gwala Multipurpose Centre in Zamdela, Sasolburg. The ANC, supported by 31 councillors, brought a motion of no confidence against Zwane. This led to DA members staging a walk-out.
Municipal spokesperson, Gino Albert, said Malindi was elected unopposed during the council sitting. His nomination as the mayor was put forward by the ATM and was seconded by the ANC. Albert said all opposition parties in the council were present during today's council meeting.
Before Zwane was ousted as the mayor, DA Federal Council Chairperson Helen Zille led a picket against his removal as mayor and said the party wanted to prevent the multimillion-rand looting of the municipality.
However, EFF Free State Chairperson Maphaule Liphoko said the notion that the DA sought to prevent corruption in Metsimaholo was nonsensical.
