Free State settlement might be demolished─── 14:25 Tue, 23 May 2023
Hundreds of residents in a newly established settlement at Botshabelo West in the Free State woke up to threats that their shacks will be demolished.
The settlement was allegedly approved by the Bloemfontein-based Mangaung Metro Municipality.
One of the residents in the area, Mantele Matsi, says that the community of the newly established settlement, which he referred to as N8 Park, saw a Facebook post of the municipality threatening to demolish their homes.
Matsi says that this morning, several police vehicles were deployed in the area to allegedly remove residents. It is further alleged that the High Court granted the metro a court order to demolish the settlement.
Matsi alleged that a clerk from the offices of the metro came with police to inform them of the decision to evict them, without proof, and no proof showing that she is employed by the municipality. Matsi says other residents then refused to move without any proof of a court order to evict them.
Godfrey Motloha says he was shocked by news that they will be evicted without being given 90 days' notice.
He says that he is expecting the municipality to provide alternative land for them to build another settlement before they can be evicted from N8 Park.
Questions have been sent to the municipality.
