Three defendants who face drug-related charges made a brief appearance in the Warrenton Magistrate's Court on Tuesday 11 April.
Kagisho Isaac Moiloa (49), Anna Moiloa (64), and Zusakhe Johnson (38) will remain in custody until their next court appearance.
The Hawks' provincial spokesperson, Nomthandazo Mnisi, said the accused were arrested by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, assisted by the Kimberley Flying Squad, near Warrenton on 6 April.
Mnisi said: “The team reacted to information regarding three suspects who were travelling from Johannesburg to Kimberley with a consignment of drugs. A silver Volkswagen Golf GTI was spotted on the N12 road near Warrenton.”
One of the defendants leapt out of the car's passenger side carrying a bag and made an effort to hide it in the trees and bushes.
“The driver sped off in an attempt to evade being arrested, leaving the accused with the bag behind. The team chased after the vehicle and the vehicle was pulled over and brought to a halt,” Mnisi further explained.
The team checked the bag and the car, discovering 4,000 Mandrax pills inside with an estimated street value of R240 000.
Three cell phones and a VW Golf GTI were also taken for additional examination during the search.
The case was postponed until 21 April for a bail application.
