The North West premier has announced another cabinet reshuffle. Premier Bushy Maape has appointed the ANC Deputy Provincial Secretary and Deputy Speaker of the Provincial Legislature, Viola Motsumi, as the new MEC for Education.

Matsemela resigned on Tuesday. The reasons for her resignation are not clear. This is the second cabinet reshuffle since the ANC came from its 9th provincial elective conference and elected former Member of Parliament (MP), Nono Maloyi, as its chairperson.

Earlier Maape fired former Cooperative Governance and Human Settlements (Cogta) MEC, Lenah Miga. ANC chairperson Maloyi was then appointed as the new MEC for the department.

During her resignation, Matsemela thanked Maape for allowing her to serve the people of the province.

“Dear Honourable Speaker, Resignation Letter: Mmaphefo Lucy Matsemela
I hereby render my resignation as a member of the NWPL with immediate effect, from the 6th December 2022. Thank you for allowing me to serve the people of the North West Province with honour. Hope you find this in order, yours sincerely,” she said.

Meanwhile, the North West Department of Education has welcomed the appointment of Motsumi as the new MEC for Education in the North West as of Wednesday 7 December 2022.

Departmental spokesperson, Elias Malindi, says with her spirit of servitude to the people of North West, the department is undoubtedly proud to have one of its own holding the fort and wishes her the very best.

“On behalf of the department, I take this time to announce to the public and welcome MEC Motsumi to the department. She is no stranger to the institution. We have witnessed her passion to serve the people of North West as a teacher, and our parliamentary liaison. We believe she will lead the department to its greatest heights in our quest to continually improve the quality of education in the province. We also sincerely thank the outgoing MEC, Mmaphefo Matsemela, who gracefully led the department during her tenure,” Malindi said.
