The Free State farming community has been advised to beef up their security, especially between 20:00 and 05:00.

This follows after the arrest of two suspects who allegedly stole 36 sheep at a farm in Tierpoort on Thursday 24 November 2022.

Provincial police spokesperson, Mahlomola Kareli, says two suspects, aged 40, were arrested after members from the Bloemfontein and Provincial Stock Theft Units followed up on information regarding a drop off point of the sheep.

He explains that the team responded swiftly by surprising the suspects while they were busy offloading the animals the same day they were reported stolen. According to Kareli, one other suspect managed to flee the scene.

“The value of the stolen sheep is estimated to be R108 000. Thirteen of the stolen sheep were recovered, of which seven were slaughtered and six were still alive. The police are continuing with the investigation and more arrests are to follow. The police would like to advise the farming community to keep checking their stock and intensify their security around camps as suspects operate between 20:00 and 05:00. They are also advised to call their local police if any movement is detected or a suspected vehicle is seen in their vicinity,” he adds.

Kareli further adds the two suspects that were arrested will appear before the Tierpoort Magistrate's Court soon, while the search for the remaining suspect continues.
