October Transport Month launched in Free State─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 12:00 Fri, 07 Oct 2022
In a mission to reform the state of roads in the Free State, the provincial Department of Police, Roads and Transport will use R13 million of its own money to fill potholes.
Speaking at the provincial launch for the October Transport Month campaign, the MEC for the department, William Bulwane, says the campaign seeks to raise awareness of the important role of transport in the economy. He also said it is important for the provincial communities to know that the money allocated to the department for road infrastructure projects does not meet the provincial demands on road infrastructure. “Most of our roads' lifespans are overdue, and they need to be reconstructed while we have others that need to be repaired and maintained,” he adds.

As far as Operation Vala Zonke, which was launched earlier in August of 2022, it is expected that by at least the end of March 2023, potholes will be filled. The department has partnered with SANRAL, in addition, an app has been created to assist motorists with capturing and reporting potholes on the road. However, at the moment the system is not fully functional – but when once the system is up and running, and the people are trained, it will be effective in such a way that once a motorist captures and registers a pothole – there will be an instant notification received on the system and a team will be dispatched to find and attend to the identified pothole.
