Day Four of the Sasol Solar Challenge is progressing smoothly with three of the top four teams neck and neck.

The Belgium team, Agoria Solar Team, is in the lead, with the Brunel Solar Team clocking in second and the Tswane University of Technology Solar Team in third place.

Unfortunately, one of the Central South African contenders, the Central University of Technology, Free State, had to withdraw from the competition on day two of the challenge due to technical issues that were beyond repair.

The University from the Free State and North West University are the other two Central SA teams still participating in the challenge.

According to Robert Walker, the owner and director of the Sasol Solar Challenge, the teams have received a warm welcome along the route when they started their journey in Johannesburg on Friday 9 September 2022.

The challenge is set to conclude in Cape Town on Friday 16 September.

It can be followed through the Sasol Solar Challenge app where teams’ progress can be tracked.

The Sasol Solar Challenge takes place every two years with engineering enthusiasts, university and school teams from across South Africa and the world competing.

The winning team will be decided based on the most kilometres clocked over the entire span of the journey.

Teams compete in three separate participation classes, each with different design criteria, for example, optimal efficiency, endurance, practicality and everyday applicability.

The local and international teams have to design and build solar-powered vehicles robust enough to drive across South Africa in eight days.  Judging criteria includes design, manufacturing and strategy skills.
