'No penalties for illegal electricity connections' | News Article

No penalties for illegal electricity connections will be issued to Maluti-A-Phofung residents.

This, according to the municipality’s new administration, MAP 16. The administration has started replacing bridged meter boxes with new sealed boxes as they battle with the electricity crisis in the municipality.

MAP 16 spokesperson, Paratlane Motloung, tells OFM News that illegal connections are a major contributing factor to the electricity crisis.

“We have started with normalisation of the electricity, where we are unbridging the meters, also cutting illegal connections. So people are beginning to buy electricity in areas that we have already been to, which is the reason why we were able to pay Eskom some money towards the current account. We paid about R74 million.”

Motloung says the community has been very compliant with cutting illegal connections and buying electricity, which will help with resolving the electricity crisis sooner.
