Notes found on at least 12 of the 20 bodies of zama-zamas discovered at Orkney, outside Klerksdorp, may assist police in the North West with their ongoing investigations.

The police say this might help in tracing and identifying the bodies. The gruesome discovery was made on Tuesday when 20 bodies, believed to be those of zama-zamas operating in an obsolete shaft, were found stashed in grain bags next to a road in Orkney.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, told OFM News that some notes have names, while others only have locations.

He said this may play a role in police being able to identify them.

Mokgwabone confirmed that the zama-zamas are believed to be from Lesotho.

An inquest has been opened into the matter. The North West Department of Community Safety MEC, Sello Lehari, has indicated that police are expected to make arrests soon.
