North West Cogta MEC Gordon Kegakilwe, who passed away from a cardiac arrest due to coronavirus (Covid-19) complications will be laid to rest in Vryburg this morning.

President Cyril Ramaphosa granted Kegakilwe a provincial official funeral category 1, and also ordered that the national flag fly at half-mast.

Kegakilwe was admitted with Covid-19 pneumonia on Sunday at the Vryburg Private Hospital and later on Monday transported to a medical facility in Klerksdorp where he died after several attempts to resuscitate him failed.

His death comes amidst a surge in the rate of infections and a rise in the death toll among Covid-19 patients in the province.

The office of the premier, Job Mokgoro, on Thursday revealed that the funeral service will comply with the Covid-19 lockdown regulations, and applicable health protocols will be observed.

Mokgoro's office further added that the funeral service will be broadcast on different media platforms, including live streaming on the office of the premier's Facebook page from 07h00.

On Thursday OFM News reported that Health MEC in the province, Madoda Sambatha revealed that he is a suspected Coronavirus contact of three cases of Covid-19, involving the premier, Mokgoro and two other MECs including, Kegakilwe and Saliva Molapisi.

Sambatha also announced that he is now in isolation with no symptoms and continues to do his work virtually, while he is set to go for testing on Friday.
