North West police in Orkney near Klerksdorp launched an inquest after police in that area discovered the body of a 56-year-old woman on Thursday.

Police spokesperson, Adéle Myburgh, says the body was discovered in the afternoon in an open field next to the R502.

She says the body was found to be in a decomposed state, and that the victim had been reported missing in Kanana in February 2020.

She adds the woman was last seen alive in January this year. Myburgh has further appealed to anyone with information regarding the matter to contact the police.

The killing of women in the country recently made headlines, with many people slamming the South African government for not doing enough to deal with the scourge of gender-based violence.

In 2019, President Cyril Ramaphosa told citizens that urgent action was needed to tackle gender-based violence in the country.

At an emergency sitting of parliament, Ramaphosa said the figures for violence against women and children were similar to those of a country at war.

Some 2,700 women and 1,000 children were murdered by men in 2018, and at least 100 rapes were reported daily.

The spike in violence against women has ignited protests in many areas.
