Members of both the Thaba Nchu and Botshabelo communities are concerned about the safety of learners and teachers at six different schools in these areas.

This after newly built grade R classrooms are said to be in a dire state. According to the spokesperson and ward 32 committee member in Botshabelo, Joseph Mbase, the six grade R classrooms were built with the help of the Free State Department of Education, together with KST. He further explains that these classrooms might collapse as the quality and safety were highly compromised during the construction phase.

Mbase further says that these classrooms are expected to be handed over to six schools by the Free State Department of Education and KST in the next couple of days.

The Free State Education Department spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, told OFM News that the department is aware of the situation and they are planning to meet with the communities to hear their concerns.

This comes just days after the tragedy at Hoërskool Driehoek in Vanderbijlpark, where a school walkway collapsed killing four pupils.
