'Hoffman Square monument to reinvent Bloemfontein'─── REFILWE GAESWE 09:31 Sun, 21 Dec 2014
Bloemfontein - The officially opened Hoffman Square monument will reinvent Bloemfontein’s image.
Mangaung Metropolitan Mayor Thabo Manyoni says Hoffman Square monument has historic significance as it was named after the first President of the Orange Free State and was established during the early 1930’s.
He was speaking at the monument’s opening event in Bloemfontein’s CBD on Saturday.
Manyoni explained that Hoffman Square was part of the municipality’s greening programme and they have reinvented it by planting trees and beautifying it.
He says the intention is that the community owns their own public spaces.
The huge monument was erected to commemorate soldiers from Bloemfontein who were killed during the First and Second World Wars.
The monument is the only feature remaining of the old square after the area was changed in the 1970s.
