Rustenburg - Police Minister Nathi Nhleko is expected to meet with community stakeholders in the troubled platinum belt region near Rustenburg in North West today.
Police said in a statement the aim of today’s meeting, a follow-up to a similar visit last month, is to encourage and mobilise the community in the fight against crime, particularly in the platinum belt. Nhleko is expected to meet with the local business community, the Community Policing Forum and other external stakeholders.
The meeting comes just days ahead of the second anniversary of the Marikana massacre on August 16.
More than forty people were killed in confrontations with police during a mining strike there in 2012. Since then, the region has also seen numerous murders and attacks on individuals belonging to rival unions in the mining sector.
