Amcu members to return to work tomorrow─── 06:08 Tue, 24 Jun 2014

Rustenburg - Striking members of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) will return to work tomorrow, bringing an end to a five-month long strike, after the employers' wage offer was accepted yesterday.
Amcu president Joseph Mathunjwa told around 20 000 union members at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Phokeng, near Rustenburg that the sector will never be the same again, adding that Amcu has done in five months what other unions could not do in more than 20 years.
He said the agreement would be signed today and workers will return to work by tomorrow.
The wage settlement will increase the salary of the lowest-paid worker by R1 000 in the first two years and R950 in the third year. The salary of officials and artisans will increase by eight percent in the first year and by 7.5 percent in the second and third years. Workers are expected to be back paid within seven days of returning to work. All essential workers who were dismissed at Lonmin for being part of the strike will also be reinstated.
Amcu members at Lonmin, Impala Platinum and Anglo American Platinum downed tools on January 23, demanding a monthly basic salary of R12 500.
