Christiana - Despite numerous attempts, OFM News has not been able to get clarity from North West police on the current state of affairs with protest action in Christiana.
A resident from the area earlier said vehicles travelling on the N12 were being stoned and the road was unsafe. He said although matters were still calm in the town itself, protestors had blockaded all entrances to the township of Utlwanang and the situation there appeared to be quite volatile.
A police officer in Bloemhof said the N12 was open to traffic there and that the situation in Boitumelong township appeared quiet this morning.
Numerous houses belonging to police officers, the mayor, counsellors and municipal officials have been torched since last week, with more than 100 people arrested so far.
Meanwhile unrest now seems to have spread to the Maquassi Hills Local Municipality in the vicinity of Wolmaransstad.
Councillor Don van Zyl says a group of protestors were earlier burning tyres on the Maquassi Hills/Wesselsbron road next to Chris Hani Township. They are allegedly unhappy over the contractors appointed to work on the Schweizer-Reneke Wolmaransstad road.
Van Zyl says police have dispersed the group and put out the fires but says the situation is still volatile and motorists must be cautious.
