Marikana - The Lonmin dispute will not be quickly resolved as it involves more than just wages.

That's according to Gideon du Plessis, general secretary of trade union Solidarity, which has been involved with peace talks and wage negotiations for striking Marikana miners.

He was speaking after armed strikers and protesters at the mine outside Rustenburg in North West failed to return to work Monday as required by a recently signed peace accord.

Monday marked the first day of negotiations in the wage dispute.

Church leaders provided feedback on behalf of the workers’ committee at the meeting, indicating that the workers will not return to work until their demand for a R12 500 wage is met.

The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration gave the strikers a last chance by postponing the negotiations until today in order to meet with the workers’ committee.

Meanwhile, the National Union of Mineworkers' Eddie Majadibodu says the impasse was caused by a lack of trust between workers and their elected representatives:
