Bloemfontein - The father of the DA's leader in the Free State, Patricia Kopane, has dismissed allegations of nepotism levelled against the pair.
James Letuka says he is not new to politics and Kopane is not the reason he got his new position.
The Democratic Alliance's Roy Jankielsohn yesterday introduced Letuka as one of the party’s legislature members at a media briefing in Bloemfontein.
Letuka says he was part of the black consciousness movement, alongside Steve Biko, during the establishment of the South African Student Organisation (SASO).
He affirmed Jankielsohn’s statement that Letuka was approached to join the party several years ago but he indicated he wasn’t ready. Letuka says he submitted his application to be a parliamentary member last year.
Letuka says he initially applied for both national and provincial legislature and didn’t mind where the party allocated him.

Kopane is not a member of the provincial legislature but serves as a shadow minister of health at national parliament.
