Welkom celebrates half-a-century | News Article

The Free State city of Welkom is today celebrating 50 years as a city.

The city which was established around its mining industry, started out as a settlement after gold was discovered in the region, becoming a town on 23 July 1948.

According to Welkom City/Stad’s Facebook page, the town became a municipality 13 years after being proclaimed a town and now falls under Matjhabeng Municipality.

In February 1968, the town received city status, marking this event with the opening of the Civic Centre, which had been under construction since 1964.

The city is now the second largest in the province and is a part of the Free State Goldfields.
