Historical Event:

• 1897: President Paul Kruger urges closer union of the South African Republic and the Orange Free State. A treaty of alliance follows.
• 1990: ANC denies responsibilities for the unrest in homelands.
• 1980: P.W. Botha announces that all South Africans will take part in a constitutional conference.
• 1951: Helen Zille, leader of the Democratic Alliance, is born in Johannesburg
• 1946: Lt Tommy Rose covers the distance between South Africa and England in six days, six hours and fifty-seven minutes in a record flight.
• 1953: A rusty 1.4kg shell, dating back to 1901, explodes in the playground of a Johannesburg school, injuring more than thirty children and a schoolteacher. The shell was found on a koppie near the school by one of the pupils who brought it to school.
• 1965: £100 000 worth of gold that went missing on the Cape Town Castle, is found near the ship's engine room in Durban.
• 2005: An earth tremor measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale strikes South Africa with its epicentre believed to be at the Hartebeesfontein gold mine near Klerksdorp. There is a difference of opinion whether the quake was mining-induced or not.
• 1964: 1st Ford Mustang produced.

Arts, Music, TV:

• 1927: Michal Grobbelaar, SA actor and arts administrator, is born.
• 1868: The opera "Hamlet" premieres in Paris..
• 1961: Supremes release "I Want A Guy" & "Never Again".
• 1990: The Weekly Mail reports that, since the beginning of February 1990, thirty people have died in Bophuthatswana. Violence and school boycotts continue for the next week.
• 2015: South African rapper Nkululeko Habedi was allegedly stabbed by his girlfriend. He was better known as Flabba, and was a member of popular group Skwatta Kamp.

Sports:

• 1978: Ladies Figure Skating Champions in Ottawa won by Anett Potzsch (GDR).
• 1984: Phila 76'ers block 20 Seattle shots tying NBA regulation game record.
• 1989: Roger Kingdom runs world record 60m hurdles indoor (7.36 sec).
• 1993: Pittsburgh Penguins begin NHL record 17 game winning streak.
• 1997: Senior Golf Slam.
