• 1977: Due to insufficient evidence South African police are cleared of charges with regards to the death of Steve Biko.
• 1971: Robert Sobukwe, former PAC leader, is finally refused permission to leave the country.
• 1865: Major William Jardine, one of the first collectors of Africana, is born in Cape Town.
• 1982: Afrikaans poet, Breyten Breytenbach, is released from prison after serving seven of the nine years to which he was sentenced in 1975.
• 1932: "Adventures of Charlie Chan" 1st heard on NBC-Blue radio network.
• 1952: First human birth televised to public (KOA-TV Denver, Colo).
• 1906: Eric Dalton, cricketer (2 centuries in 15 Tests for South Africa 1929-39), is born.
• 1966: Clive Eksteen, SA slow left-armer cricketer (1993), is born.
• 1983: Atholl Mckinnon, SA lefty spinner cricketer in eight Tests, dies.
• 2000: Lucas Radebe, SA born soccer star, wins the Fifa Fair Play award, but is sent off the next day in a League game for Leeds.
• 2004: South Africa's Shaun Pollock becomes only the fifth player in test cricket history to take 300 wickets and score 3 000 runs on the fifth day of the second and final Test against India in Calcutta, yet SA loses the test.
