• 2004: Swazi King Mswati III, Africa's last absolute monarch, has picked a 16-year-old girl, Miss Teen Swaziland as his new wife, bringing to twelve the number of official spouses. She underwent blood tests to determine whether she was HIV positive and was expected to receive the royal blessing of the queen mother before being unveiled as the king's new bride.

• 1890: Benjamin John Peter Tyamzashe, Xhosa composer, choir conductor and organist, is born in Kimberley.
• 1926: Dr Thomas Dowling (65), conductor of the South African Music Association, dies in Cape Town.
• 1958: First colour video recording on magnetic tape presented, Charlotte, NC.
• 1986: 3rd MTV Awards: Whitney Houston wins.

Sports:

• 1891: The SA rugby team loses the third test against the British Isles in Newlands and also the series without scoring a single point.
• 1953: The SA rugby team loses 14-18 against Australia in Newlands.
• 1961: Ernest George Bock, SA cricket player in one test (1935/1936), dies in Springs.
• 1960: Cassius Clay wins Olympic light heavyweight gold medal.
• 1997: Athens, Greece, selected for 2004 Olympics.
