Australia gets first woman prime minister | News Article

Australia's Julia Gillard has become the country's first female prime minister after Kevin Rudd stood aside from a party ballot. Rudd apparenlty stepped aside in the knowledge he would suffer an embarrassing defeat. According to Gillard the government had been losing its way and she promised to make it strong for this year's general election. The Labour Party suffered a sharp drop in support in opinion polls. Gillard, who was formerly deputy prime minister, stood unopposed at a vote of the Labor Party's 112 members of parliament at a meeting this morning.
