The Good Blog - Baby Names | News Article

Parents in court for baby daughter's unusual name - and told the judge would pick new one if they didn't!

Baby names can cause a lot of arguments.

People have very different tastes, some want classic and traditional while others want quirky and unique, so lots of parents-to-be can struggle to agree.

But imagine finally settling on the perfect name, finally agreeing, and then being told you're legally not allowed to have it.

This is what happened to a couple in France after they picked a rather unusual name for their baby girl.

They wanted to call her Liam.

Obviously the name itself isn't unusual, but the French Government had issue with the fact they had picked a traditional boys name for a girl.

They were worried it "would be likely to create a risk of gender confusion", reports The Local .

The prosecutor said the name was "contrary to the interest of the child and could harm her in her social relations" and told a judge to ban the parents from using it.

If they failed, the judge was told to come up with a new name for the little girl.

The parents are fighting the decision and are seeking legal help, but until then they've postponed her baptism.

France is known for being very strict when it comes to baby names, and this kind of court hearing isn't unusual.

In the past parents have been banned from naming their children Nutella, Strawberry and Manhattan.
