Chippa United climbed out of the relegation zone after a 2-0 win over Free State Stars in an Absa Premiership match played at Goble Park on Saturday evening.

The result moved PE-based Chippa to fourth-from-bottom on the log, while Stars were left languishing in second-last position.

After a tight opening to proceedings, it was Chippa United who took the lead when Rhulani Manzini converted a penalty.

Play was restricted to midfield exchanges as both teams struggled to get on top. The dire log position of Stars and Chippa meant that both were reluctant to risk too much – and, as a result, it made for a tough battle.

With nothing happening for Stars in their attempt to get back into the game, they made two substitutions, with Makhehlene Makhaula coming in for Goodman Dlamini and, later, Sibusiso Masina replacing Relebogile Mokhuoane.

Chippa also brought in some fresh legs as Andile Mbenyane replaced Ruzaigh Gamieldien in the 63rd minute and Thabo Rakhale coming on for Mark Mayambela four minutes later.

Stars finished the game strong and threw everything but the kitchen sink at Chippa’s defence. Harris Tchilombou had a great chance to level for the Free State club, but unfortunately directed his effort straight at Chippa goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela.

As a final throw of the dice, Stars brought on speedy forward Sinethemba Jantjie in place of Michelle Katsvairo as they continued their desperate search for an equaliser.

And, with Stars throwing players forward, it was inevitable that they would leave the team short in defence. As such, it was no surprise when Chippa made it 2-0 on the break five minutes before full-time with a goal from Kurt Lentjes.
