Gauteng police officers under investigation for assaulting civilians─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 08:17 Tue, 04 Jul 2023
An investigation has been launched after police officers were accused of assaulting unknown victims in Gauteng.
A recent video clip doing the rounds on social media, allegedly showing police officers assaulting civilians, was brought to the attention of the police. They launched an investigation into the identities of the alleged victims and perpetrators. Police have also confirmed that an internal departmental investigation is underway.
National police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, said the police could trace the victims, who have since given their statements as part of the ongoing investigations. Mathe previously stated that a preliminary report indicated that the vehicle in the video belongs to police and that the men seen in the video are SAPS members.

“The police officers involved have also been identified and will be subjected to internal processes. Management of the SAPS views this as serious and will get to the bottom of this incident.
“While the internal departmental investigation into the conduct of the members is underway, the SAPS distances itself from the conduct and behaviour depicted in the video, which does not align with the values and code of conduct of the SAPS. The code of conduct outlines the values and principles that all SAPS members are expected to uphold, including integrity, professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights,” she said.
