The death toll in the Boksburg gas tanker explosion has increased to 40. Three more people have succumbed to their injuries in the past week.

The horrific incident on Christmas Eve, left Boksburg residents reeling. A truck, stuck under a low-lying bridge, exploded near the Tambo Memorial Hospital.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi confirmed all victims have been accounted for.

The Ekhuruleni Metropolitan Municipality is reportedly also seeking legal advice on a possible class action lawsuit against the trucking company and the driver of the vehicle that exploded on Christmas Eve.

Premier Lesufi said it was in their right to pursue legal action in this regard.

He said he had the difficult task of visiting each of the families of the victims who perished in the massive blast, which is still under investigation.

The premier said he hoped the police's investigation would provide answers for the families.
