Minister in the Presidency, Mondli Gungubele, says the threat of a strike by public sector workers will bring the country's economy to its knees.
Civil servants are going to have more protests next Tuesday as they continue to pressure government to up its wage increase offer of 3%.
The unions have also rejected a recalculated offer of 7.5% by government.
Gungubele said steps were being taken to improve the economy, but they get undermined by different situations.
He was speaking at a post-cabinet briefing on Friday.
"Any attempt now to stop work will have a huge impact on the economy.
"But having said that, I strongly encourage workers to continue to engage the relevant ministers, the minister of finance and public works and we hope all these things have a solution on the table."
