Police to investigate Qholani eviction─── 09:33 Sat, 04 Jul 2020
National police have been tasked with investigating the eviction of Bulelani Qholani from his Khayelitsha home.
A naked Qholani was dragged out of his informal structure by the city’s law enforcement on Wednesday.
The structure was also taken down.
The city received widespread backlash for the incident.
On Friday, Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato appeared before Parliament’s Committee of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma slammed the city’s actions. “The city may be having its own investigations but from the national side the Department of Police is also doing an investigation,” says Dlamini-Zuma.
The four officers implicated have since been suspended.
“When we were on lockdown the very first time, there were evictions in the City of Cape Town. I spoke to the mayor myself about them,” Dlamini-Zuma said.
“He said the very same thing as this presentation today.”
Dlamini-Zuma urged officials to exercise caution when evicting anyone during the Covid-19 lockdown.
“Evictions are not allowed during this time but equally land invasions are not allowed.
“Whatever the investigation will say, the incident was inhumane.”
