Motsaalore Secondary School in Khunotswana near Zeerust has been judged the best performing school at the North West provincial Africa Month celebrations in Letlhakeng at Rustenburg.
The school displayed the Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) cultural dances, songs, attire, and food. They were competing against 18 other schools representing various African countries. Motsaalore Secondary won R10,000 for their efforts as the provincial government closed the Africa Month celebrations on Friday.
The day was filled with excitement and style, with people turning up in their numbers dressed in different traditional dress in celebration of Africa Month. Local musicians showcased their talents, crafters exhibited their cultural wares, and African food was prepared.
Local musician Ntsiwane Raphesu gave a star performance, singing one of her songs while playing guitar, and expressed appreciation for being called to perform at the event.
"Such platforms mean a lot. It is an opportunity to show how villages have talented individuals who need a chance to grow," she said.
Newly appointed North West culture, arts, and traditional affairs MEC Virginia Tlhapi said the purpose was to celebrate African diversity and success, as well as highlight the cultural and economic potential that existed on the continent.
The performances by young children was an indication that the African heritage would not fade. "This will be a legacy, hence it is important to continue holding such events in remembrance of where we came from," Tlhapi said.
