The Suzuki Griquas secured their fourth consecutive bonus-point win in the SA Cup on Saturday, defeating the Griffons during the fourth round in Welkom.

It was another standout performance by winger Dylan Maart, the Griquas Player of the Year for 2024, who scored four of his team’s eight tries in their 52-33 victory.

Griquas and the Pumas remain the only unbeaten teams in the competition.

Griquas raced to an early 14-0 lead after Maart crossed the try line twice in quick succession, but the Griffons fought back determinedly to close the gap. Their forwards, in particular, gained significant territory with strong mauls on several occasions. However, the home side made a few costly errors, including inconsistent passing and poor kicking out of hand.

Griquas’ back three – Maart, Gurswin Wehr, and Cameron Hufke – were dangerous every time they had ball in hand. By half-time, Maart and Hufke had each secured a brace of tries, helping the visitors to a commanding 33-14 lead at the break.

Early in the second half, Wehr – who made his Griquas debut this season after spending four years at the Griffons – added his second try to extend his team’s lead.

However, Griquas’ discipline wavered in the latter stages of the match, resulting in Dandré Delport, a former Griffons player, being shown a yellow card.

Despite this, the Kimberley-based side did more than enough to maintain their position at the top of the log. Their unbeaten run in the SA Cup now stands at 14 matches, as they remain undefeated in the competition’s history.

Scorers:

Griffons: Tries - Willem van den Hever, Mingo Piti, Penalty Pry, Keanu Vers, Jared Kruger Conv. - Qamani Kota (3).

Griquas: Tries - Dylan Maart (4), Gurswin Wehr (2), Cameron Hufke (2) Conv.- George Whitehead (6).
