“My advice and the team will be to play like they have played the whole season. You prepare from the first day to win a final. To change your way of play or let the emotions of the day engulf you, you'll let yourself down.”

The Glasgow Warriors coach, Franco Smith, has shared some of his wisdom for the Shimlas ahead of their big Varsity Cup final against the Ikeys in Bloemfontein next week.

The former Springbok, Smith, was the Shimlas coach when they won their only Varsity Cup title back in 2015 when they beat the North West University Eagles 63-33 in the final.

The following year, Smith guided the Toyota Cheetahs to the Currie Cup title in his first year in charge.

Smith told OFM Sport that the prep for the final began in round one.

“We always say it's not about getting into the final, it's about winning the final,” said Smith.

“There for my advice and the team will be to play like they have played the whole season. You prepare from the first day to win a final. To change your way of play or let the emotions of the day engulf you, you'll let yourself down.

“Go out there and play the way you've played the whole season.

“We as your supporters know that you're going to be the best version of yourselves. Good luck!”

Shimlas rugby is very much a part of Smith’s DNA as he not only coached the team, but he also played for the team back in the day.

When Smith left the Shimlas a coach to take up the head coach role of the Cheetahs he took numerous players with him such as the Rugby World Cup winner, Ox Nche, as well as flanker Daniel Maartens and the flyhalf Niel Marais.

Nche and Marais both played in the 2016 Currie Cup final, while Maartens didn't. Maartens went on to win the Currie Cup with the Pumas in 2022 and with the Cheetahs in 2023.

Monday’s final at Shimla Park kicks off at 19:00.
