Varsity Cup star Nkula joins the Cheetahs─── MORGAN PIEK 13:38 Tue, 03 May 2022
The University of the Free State Shimlas fullback, Litha Nkula, is the latest player to receive a contract at the Toyota Cheetahs.
Nkula follows in the footsteps of the flyhalf, George Lourens and the lock Thabang Mahlasi who signed their contracts earlier.
Like Mahlasi, Nkula has signed a dual contract which will allow him to play for the Shimlas again next year.
Mahlasi started training with the Cheetahs last week, while Nkula and Lourens slotted in with the squad on Monday.
Nkula told OFM Sport that he is sure his brand of rugby will allow him to slot in at the Cheetahs well.
“I looked at various factors before making up my mind, but eventually decided to sign with the Cheetahs”, said the explosive player.
“I've watched a couple of games and campaigns of the Cheetahs and I think that they play a good brand of rugby.
“It is more suitable for me to have joined the Cheetahs and this will also allow me to express myself on the field.”
Nkula cannot ask for better players to learn from than the fullbacks, Clayton Blommetjies and Cohen Jasper. Blommetjies is a senior statesmen in the Cheetahs setup and has been linked with move to the Stormers at the end of the season, while Jasper himself still played in the Varsity Cup just last year.
Nkula added that although he took part in his first training session with the Cheetahs on Monday, he is already learning from the more experienced players.
“I'm really enjoying it here at the Cheetahs and they have given me some tips already. I’ve already been able to put the lessons that I’ve learnt into practice at the Cheetahs.”
Meanwhile, the Cheetahs will face the Lions at 19:00 on Friday night at Ellis Park in the Currie Cup.
