The teenage sprinting sensation from Bloemfontein, Rumé Burger, has officially announced herself to South Africa by winning gold at the 2025 ASA Senior National Track & Field Championships in Potchefstroom.
Still only 17-years-old, Burger claimed gold on Saturday in the women's 200m at the McArthur Athletics Stadium. Competing in her very first senior national championships, she added the 200m title to the 100m bronze she won on Wednesday, during the opening day of the championships.

Burger clocked a time of 23.49 seconds to win the 200m, beating two star sprinters to the national title — and impressively, it wasn’t even close to her personal best.
She has achieved a rare double this season, having also won 200m gold at the Junior National Track & Field Championships in Cape Town earlier in April.
On Saturday, Burger — the daughter of a former Toyota Cheetahs winger and Springbok Sevens speedster — secured the gold by finishing 0.10 seconds ahead of 100m gold medallist Joviale Mbisha, who also hails from the Free State and claimed silver in 23.59 seconds.
Highly rated sprinter Hannah Hope Vermaak finished in 23.65 seconds to earn the bronze medal. Both Mbisha and Hope Vermaak run in the colours of Central Gauteng.
Earlier this month, Burger broke four national schools records at the 2025 National High Schools Championships at the Mangaung Athletics Stadium in Bloemfontein, claiming the 100m–200m gold double.
