George Russell secured a first Formula 1 win of the season for Mercedes-Benz on Sunday by winning the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg.

This was just the British drivers second win in Formula 1.

This was helped by a collision between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris on lap 64 while fighting for the lead. 

Verstappen had to settle for fifth overall after being able to make it to the pits, while Norris' race was over.

The Australian youngster Oscar Piastri finished in second while Carlos Sainz of Ferrari rounded off the podium in third.

Following his win Russell said he saw that Verstappen and Norris were having a go at each other and he was ready to pounce and the right moment.

“It’s incredible - that’s the only way I can describe it,” said Russell after his win.

“We had a tough fight in the early stages to make sure we held on to P3. That would prove crucial at the end.

“I could see that Max and Lando were having a big battle. We were only just over 10 seconds behind the pair of them, which is really encouraging pace-wise.

“I knew there was a possibility that they could come together, even if it was only a slim chance.

“You have to be there at the end to pick up the pieces and that’s exactly where we were. I am so proud to be back on the top step of the podium.”

This week the teams head to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix.
