Van Niekerk ready for his long-awaited return─── MORGAN PIEK 14:22 Tue, 15 Sep 2020
The long wait is over for the 400m world record holder, Wayde van Niekerk, who will make his return to international athletics on Tuesday evening.
The sprint sensation from Bloemfontein will be competing in the 400m for men at the Gala Dei Castelli meet in Bellinzona.
Due to a knee injury, the 28-year-old has not competed at international level in three years and seven months.
Van Niekerk indicated that he is fully fit and ready to compete abroad again.
“My body is in good health, which I’m grateful for, and I’m looking forward to racing again.
“We don’t have any goals for the meeting. I’m just excited to see how my body feels again in a race situation, and it will be nice to loosen up the legs.
“It will give us a good indication of where I am in my training, after having to spend 25 days in isolation, and we can then focus on what needs to be done to gain some momentum towards the 2021 season.”
Van Niekerk will be in the starting blocks at 20:10 this evening.
Other South Africans in action tonight are Akani Simbine‚ Antonio Alkana, and the long-jumper Ruswahl Samaai.
