Take medication to lower testosterone levels or risk being barred from the track.
That was the crux of new International Association of Athletics Federations hyperandrogenism rule that would allow women affected by high levels of testosterone to compete at international level only if they took medication to reduce naturally occurring levels of the male hormone.
That means that doubt will once again be cast over double Olympic and triple world 800m champion Caster Semenya's reign as queen of the middle distance, who has been in the spotlight for the same issue before.
In a previous attempt to remedy the so called advantageous condition in female athletes, the IAAF's regulatory attempts got them into hot water with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in 2015.
The IAAF Council announced last month that following a review of available evidence it would revise its regulations, with the changes coming into force on November 1.
