‘City slickers’ blessed to be part of Nampo Alfa championship─── 08:59 Wed, 11 Oct 2023

“The fierce competition is intimidating, we are privileged to take part in it.”
John Devonport, owner of Devlan Limousin near the Vaal Dam, has reason to be proud of his stud – no less than four of his cattle have qualified for the Nampo Alfa Interbreed Championship to be held at Nampo Park outside Bothaville this coming weekend.
Two of the cattle were sold to Gert and Sjuna Davis of Davis Limousin outside Delmas earlier this year, namely Devlan Mobile and Devlan Darling, who both excelled at the Ellisras Show: Mobile as the Champion Bull and Devlan Darling as the Supreme Interbreed Female Champion.
Two stars from Devonport’s stud to be seen at the Nampo Alfa Interbreed Championships are Devlan Amazing Grace, who was crowned Grand Champion Cow and Gold Cup winner at the Standerton Show, and Devlan Lancelot (formerly Devlan Knight), who won at the Thabazimbi and Parys Shows.

“We actually sold Amazing Grace earlier this year, but the buyer cancelled the transaction and we gladly took her back. She is doing extremely well.”
Devonport and his wife, Tracey, were two “city slickers from Joburg” when they first bought their farm 30 years ago. “I did not know a thing about farming but eventually found a mentor, Chris Marais from Potchefstroom.” The stud has a herd of approximately 600 breeding animals.
Devonport describes the Nampo Alfa Interbreed Championship as “very intimidating, with fierce competition. It is an exciting championship and we are privileged to take part in it.”
The Nampo Alfa Livestock, Hunting, and Outdoor Expo takes place from 12 to 14 October at Nampo Park outside Bothaville. The highlight is the international interbreed championship, which is being presented in full swing for the first time since 2019.
