Former FS mayor and CFO slapped with prison sentences | News Article

The former mayor of the Ntekoane Local Municipality in Reitz, the chief financial officer (CFO), and a third person who wrongfully benefited through an irregular tender, have been sentenced and are now serving time in jail.

Former mayor Mandla Mamba and former CFO Vincent Mkhefa were sentenced to eight years imprisonment, whilst Caroline Nketu is serving an effective four years' imprisonment.

Their sentence was handed down by the Reitz Magistrate Collins Nekosie.

These three were earlier found guilty on charges of fraud, contravening the Tender Procurement Act, and money laundering in August 2021 after state prosecutor Advocate Mvuseni Ponye and Advocate Thokozile Zumane charged them as a result of a 2011 matter. Mamba and Mkhefu were sentenced to 8-years imprisonment whilst Nketu is doing 4 years effective imprisonment.

They were involved in the siphoning off of at least R350 000 from the struggling municipality's coffers. The former mayor was accused of sourcing Nketu as a service provider, and the former CFO then approved the bulk of the money in two payments on separate occasions for work not done.

The suspects were nabbed after a whistle-blower alerted authorities to their shady dealings.

The crime relates to the installation of equipment in parks.
