State to oppose bail for NW woman who dismembered husband’s body | News Article

The state will oppose bail for the 42-year-old woman who has confessed to killing and dismembering her husband’s body with a hammer and a spade in Ledig near Sun City back in 2015.

The spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Henry Mamothame, says the accused in the cold case, Nancy Majonhi, who originally hails from Zimbabwe, appeared before the Mogwase Magistrate's Court on Thursday, where the matter was postponed to 9 September for the respective teams to prepare their legal arguments on the matter. It is only then that bail application proceedings will officially commence. Mamothame provides some background on the cold case.

The NPA provincial spokesperson says Majonhi was living with her husband, Prosper Chipungare, in July of 2015, in Ledig, when the incident occurred. Chipungare was assaulted with a hammer on the back of a heated argument with his wife.  “She then hacked him with a spade and threw the body parts into three different pit latrines before cleaning the place where the incident happened. Subsequent to the alleged killing, she went to Sun City police station where she reported her husband missing.” The accused managed to get away with the murder and fled South Africa, returning to her native Zimbabwe. It is here, years later, that she confessed to her family and in-laws that she had committed the murder and it was arranged that she make her way back to the country and hand herself in for the crime.

Police have since managed to retrieve Chipungare’s remains with the assistance of Majonhi and are now subjecting them to forensic testing.
