The cash-strapped Vryburg-based Naledi Local Municipality in the North West is yet to appoint an official municipal manager (MM), a year and a few months later after the previous one left.

This is according to a member of the DA municipal council, Jan Brand. According to him, the vacancy of the accounting officer is one of the issues which continues to have dire consequences to the state of the municipality and adds to the woes of service delivery issues.

He says the municipality refuses to appoint an MM, citing the election period. Brand adds that the municipality does not even have the cash for service delivery. The municipality is yet to comment on OFM News’ inquiry.

"People working for the Naledi Local Municipality... if we are to pay [their] salaries at the end of the month, I'm telling you that there is no money left. According to the budget, it’s about 50% of total expenses but it’s not the truth. We know that it has been shared with us in meetings that if they pay the salaries, the money is gone. So there isn’t money for service delivery,“ he adds.

Residents of the municipality have to deal with two sets of load-shedding.
