Childline South Africa has come up with a shorter toll-free number that will be faster to dial for children that are in need of help.

According to a media statement issued by the National Executive Officer of Childline South Africa, Dumisile Nala, 116 has become a new number to dial whenever children feel unsafe or mistreated. This number is deemed short, quicker to dial, and easier for children and parents to remember.

116 is a new and exclusive toll-free childline that allows South African children and parents to call with child-related matters. Nala further states that the number works across borders of the African continent and this has enabled effective delivery of Child Protection Services to all children in South Africa.

Childline South Africa and the regional network offices are open 24 hours nationally and the toll-free helpline is available 365 days. “Childline South Africa will continue to work with our stakeholders to prevent child abuse, promote and protect the welfare of all children and child support systems in South Africa,” Nala explained.

The new number 116 provides better access to child protection services throughout the African continent and it also allows Childline South Africa to strengthen its partnerships with child protection agencies across Africa.
