A motion was recently accepted in parliament to ask the Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Thoko Didiza, to declare parts of the Free State a disaster area after recent veld fires.
In response to this, Free State Agriculture MEC William Bulwane states that he supports the committee, as this will offer an opportunity to channel resources to the affected areas to enable much-needed assistance. He further adds that this will enable people to donate money directly into an account to assist those affected by the fires.

The damage that recent veld fires caused in central South Africa has been enormous. Premier of the Northern Cape, Zamani Saul along with MEC for Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Land Reform and Rural Development, Mase Manopole, recently took a helicopter ride over Jan Kempdorp and Warrenton to assess the damage that was caused by veld fires in this province.
