Agri podcast: One suspect still at large after #FarmAttack | News Article

Police in the Free State are investigating a case of house robbery after a group of men armed with knives and a panga allegedly threatened four people in a house on a farm in the Tweespruit area.

Police spokesperson, Thandi Mbambo, told OFM News the incident happened yesterday at 07:00 when a visitor to the farm saw a group of men approaching the farmhouse of John Parr and his wife, Pam. She says two teenagers, a boy and a girl, as well as their grandmother, were ordered to lie on the floor.  A shooting ensued and two of the intruders were fatally shot. Another suspect was injured and transported to the hospital.  One suspect was later apprehended by police with the help of farmers while another suspect is still at large. Mbambo says the suspects are expected to appear in the Tweespruit Magistrate's Court soon. A case of murder is also being investigated by police.

The agricultural sector could show some resilience compared to other sectors in terms of job losses due to the coronavirus pandemic. This is according to the chief economist at Agbiz, Wandile Sihlobo. Sihlobo says this is owed to two reasons, namely the fact that the agricultural sector was largely operational even during the strict level-5 lockdown, except for a few subsectors such as the wine, tobacco and wool industries, amongst others. He says these subsectors subsequently opened when the country’s lockdown moved to level 4 and 3, except for the tobacco industry whose sales remains prohibited while harvest and fieldwork are permitted. Lastly, Sihlobo says South Africa expects its second-largest grains harvest in the 2019/20 season, a harvest process that started recently. He says there is also an expectation of a record citrus harvest, general improvement in output in other fruits following drought years, and recovery in wine grapes output.
